A lot of B2B thought leadership produces no pipeline

By Abdalla Elshahhat ·

A lot of B2B thought leadership produces no pipeline. The metric the marketing team reports is engagement. The metric the CFO would care about is sourced revenue. They're not the same thing.

Here's why. Thought leadership that's generic enough to get likes is also generic enough to be forgettable. The buyer reads it, nods, scrolls on, and never connects it to a purchase decision.

What actually produces pipeline is opinion leadership.

Opinion leadership says specific things that are defensible, sometimes uncomfortable, often disagreed with. It takes a position. It names a category. It says this works, that doesn't, and here's why. It puts the writer at risk of being wrong, which is the same risk that makes them worth listening to.

Thought leadership reads as professional. Opinion leadership reads as someone with a point of view.

The first one gets posted. The second one gets remembered.

When a buyer is ready to spend, they call the person they remember, not the person whose content they liked. Memory drives purchase in B2B. Engagement doesn't.

If your content is getting engagement but not producing inbound conversations, the content is wrong. Not the channel.

Stop publishing thought leadership. Start publishing opinions you can defend.
