Sales is not marketing's downstream. That's the first mistake
Sales is not marketing's downstream. That's the first mistake.
A B2B revenue engine has four distinct layers. A lot of companies are weak in three of them, or all four.
1. Demand generation. Outbound, building the brand, content creation.
2. Pipeline conversion. Discovery, qualification, proposal, negotiation.
3. Retention. Onboarding, account health, renewal.
4. Expansion. Cross-sell, upsell, account-based growth.
If your sales team is doing all four informally, you don't have a commercial architecture. You have a hero culture.
You can't scale heroes.
The companies that grow consistently build each layer as its own system. Its own owner. Its own metric. Its own budget.
That's the difference between a sales team that grew the number this quarter and a sales engine that will grow it next quarter too.
